Hi there, my name is Patrick, and I’m a therapist here at Deep Eddy Psychotherapy. I want to share some about myself and my approach to therapy to help you decide if we may be a good fit. I’ll begin by saying that I have a deep conviction that the therapeutic relationship itself– that between client and therapist– has the potential to be healing and transformative. Finding a therapist with whom you feel comfortable is important, and I would be honored to work with you if you feel drawn to the biography and approaches I share here.
Patrick James, Doctoral Practicum Therapist
Supervised by Aaron Dembe, PhD
- Work best with: Young adults, adults, and students
- Manage Medications: Provides therapy and collaborates closely with our psychiatry team for medication management, available through internal referral if needed.
My clinical work focuses on working with clients facing anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship challenges, and unresolved emotional challenges rooted in painful experiences that continue to impact the individual. My goal is to support and walk alongside you in a process of identifying and working to change unhelpful relational patterns. I blend cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and person-centered approaches to therapy based upon client preferences and needs. I have a deep conviction that the therapeutic relationship itself– that between client and therapist– holds powerful potential for healing and transformation. I consider the therapy room a sacred space, and it is of utmost importance that you feel a sense of safety and complete freedom from judgement.
I specialize in working with individuals navigating emotional regulation difficulties, grief and loss, challenges that arise in romantic relationships, and challenges related to growing up in dysfunctional family environments.
The foundation of my therapeutic approach is a safe and non-judgmental relationship between client and therapist. I have found that individuals often feel shame and fear around opening up about their painful experiences. I am invested in facilitating an environment where you feel freedom to speak about and express any and all emotions, challenges, stories, and traumas with certainty that you will be received with compassion and empathy.
Ultimately, my goal is to support you in integrating wounded parts of yourself in the service of feeling more emotionally stable, self-confident, and building fulfilling relationships.

Personal Interests
I am originally from North Carolina and lived in Florida before moving to Austin. Beyond my work as a clinician, I love spending time in nature, especially at the beach. I also have two tuxedo cats, Oscar and Simon, who are very fancy and well dressed. Another meaningful part of my life is my ongoing research focusing on homelessness, particularly the process of transitioning from life on the street to housing. I look forward to the opportunity to get to learn about you!
