Helping Teens Feel Understood & Supported

The teen years are a time of firsts — heartbreaks, major decisions, identity crises. Figuring out who you are when life is changing fast and you’re dealing with family, school, and friendship dynamics can feel overwhelming.

Adolescence is a time of rapid development  — both emotionally and neurologically. Intense feelings and mood swings are real experiences that many teens have to deal with. This can feel unpredictable and overwhelming.

Add social media pressure, academic struggles, and family expectations, and it’s easy to understand why so many teens feel lost. Most teens lack the self-confidence or experience to handle challenges independently.

When teens struggle with these issues, it may show up as social withdrawal or irritability. For others, it might look like anxiety, sadness, or perfectionism. This isn’t just a phase. These are real issues that require support.

A skilled therapist provides the support that your teen needs — without judgment. Your teen will learn skills to help them express and manage emotions. Therapy can serve your adolescent far beyond the teenage years. It can empower your adolescent or teen to become an emotionally intelligent, capable adult.

Why It Can Be Hard To Reach Out

Both teens and parents can find it hard to reach out for therapy. Many teens worry that talking to a therapist will lead to embarrassment, judgment, or a loss of privacy. They might fear that the therapist will tell their parents what they say. They might also worry about being misunderstood. Many teens think that going to therapy means something is “wrong” with them.

Parents wonder if they’re overreacting. They start thinking, “Am I pushing too hard?” They may wonder if therapy is something that can actually help. They may worry that their teen will overreact to the idea of going to therapy.

However, therapy is a place where your teen can feel heard and understood. It sends the powerful message to your teen that “you don’t have to deal with this on your own.”

A Professional Approach to Teen Therapy

Charlotte Howard, Ph.D.

Licensed Psychologist

It can be so sad to watch a teenager hurting themselves and doing things that you can’t really control. It’s easy to just get in a power struggle or feel really helpless. At that point, in a way, we’ve already dealt the hand and they’re playing out things that happened a lot earlier in life and their relationship with you throughout their life up to that point.

All we can really do is get behind them and love them and support them in searching for who they are–becoming their best self.

How Therapy Can Help

Teen therapy provides a non-judgmental, safe way for teens to express themselves. They can discuss with their therapist things that they might not feel comfortable talking about with friends or their parents.

Therapy can help adolescents and teens better understand what they’re experiencing internally. A therapist guides them in better understanding how their thoughts and feelings are connected. They will learn to identify patterns and change behaviors that don’t serve them well.

Therapy teaches teens practical coping skills to help them cope with challenges. They will learn skills to solve conflicts with friends and siblings. They’ll be able to respond to situations more intentionally rather than impulsively.

In therapy, teens will explore feelings of isolation, sadness, and anxiety. They will learn how to better cope with these emotions. Things that were once very difficult will feel less chaotic and more manageable.

There are many different types of therapy that can be helpful for teens. The right approach depends on your teen’s personality and needs.

Therapeutic Approaches We Use

Some of the teen therapy approaches that we use include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This is one of the more widely used therapies with teens. It teaches them how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected. They'll learn to identify negative thought patterns and challenge those thoughts.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): This type of therapy is especially helpful for teens who struggle in relationships or with intense emotions. DBT teaches emotional regulation, mindfulness, and other practical skills.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): This therapy works with teens on identifying their core values, acknowledging emotions, and taking action based on those core values.
Family therapy: This is an essential therapy for many teens. It helps families strengthen communication and find healthy ways of navigating conflict.
Mindfulness-based therapy: This type of therapy helps teens learn to stay present in the moment. It may use journaling and other tools to do so.
