I take the time to meet every patient where they are. No expectations in the beginning. I take building rapport very seriously. I build trust and ensure that each person I come across feels safe, heard, and valued. Expect a safe environment. Expect a space where they are the priority. Even though confidentiality, privacy, and important procedural information may be shared, I let each patient know that the space belongs to them. Each assessment used is a tool to assess how I can best assist them in returning to a healthy baseline.

I have had many patients leave intake sessions in tears because they felt that speaking with me was the first time they actually felt heard and understood. They felt safe enough to tell me things upon our first meeting that they couldn’t tell anyone else. They ended up learning that first, they are not what they went through, and secondly, bottling emotions inside can do just as much damage as the traumatic event itself.

I strongly believe that our thoughts play an immense role in our emotions and, in turn, in our behavior. People must understand that, most of the time, even when our external situations do not change, we can change our perspective. This allows us to navigate difficult situations in healthier ways.
