I was inspired to pursue a career in Drama Therapy after going to clown school! I took a class called “somatic clowning” and, while I was already considering going into a helping profession, I was struck with how therapeutic and healing it felt for me to play as my clown character based off of my idiosyncrasies. I became very interested in the therapeutic potential of clown work, which led me to Drama Therapy! I am still interested in the therapeutic potential of clowning and have taught a few workshops helping others discover their unique clown forms. There is a very limited amount of research around the therapeutic benefits of clowning, but it does exist and has shown some promise in the identity expansion phase of addiction treatment. It’s exciting to be on the edge of some unique therapeutic work that allows me to be in a process of discovery.
The drama therapy theory that has resonated with me the most is Role Theory, so my approach is currently modeled after this. Role Theory is a drama therapy theory that sees people as multifaceted beings who can sometimes get locked in certain life roles. The goal of role-oriented therapy is to help individuals expand the amount of life roles they have access to in order to experience more flexibility in their life and relationships.
And don’t worry – I won’t have you walk around the room and make exaggerated shapes with your body to find your clown role (or any other role for that matter) unless drama therapy is something you are genuinely interested in and curious about. My #1 priority is to ensure that the approach we agree upon for our work together is something you feel really good about. We could do exclusive talk therapy, drama therapy, or a mix of both.
